Breast self-examination
Once a month, ideally a few days after your period, check your breasts in front of a mirror and while lying down. The aim is to know what is normal for you and to notice any change early.
Clinical examination
An annual examination by a breast specialist is recommended. At a younger age, ultrasound is the main method.
Mammography
Regular mammography is usually recommended from the age of 40. If there is a family risk factor, it is advisable to start screening earlier.
Changes to watch for
If you notice any of the following changes, don't wait for your next scheduled check-up:
- A new lump or thickening
- Skin dimpling or redness
- Nipple discharge
- Change in shape or size
